The Russian government has proposed a threefold increase in the excise tax rate for beer with an alcoholic content of between 0.5% and 8.6%. The proposed hike, which is yet to be approved by the Russian parliament, the Duma, would see the tax on a one-litre bottle of beer increase from US$0.09 to US$0.28 from 2010.
